Joining a school in a new country is an exciting opportunity, bringing new friendships, experiences and ways of learning. At Claremont, our English as an Additional Language (EAL) provision helps international students develop the language skills and confidence they need to make the most of that opportunity.
Â
We recognise that every student arrives with different experiences, ambitions and levels of English. Our tailored pathways offer support alongside mainstream study, helping students develop their academic English, understand the expectations of the British curriculum and progress towards their individual goals.
From the classroom to the sports field, the stage and boarding life, international students and EAL learners are part of the wider Claremont community. They learn alongside their peers, take part in school activities and bring their own perspectives and cultures to life at Claremont.
Explore our intensive English as an Additional Language (EAL) programmes designed to support international students in mastering English while adapting to an enhanced British education system and assimilating with their peers.
A focused one-year route to GCSEs for international students with strong English proficiency.
Our 1-Year GCSE Programme is designed for international students who have not followed Years 9–11 at Claremont but are ready to complete their GCSEs in one year. Students typically join us from other international schools and need an English proficiency level of at least B2.
Students follow mainstream lessons alongside their year group and are fully part of school life, including clubs, sports and leadership opportunities. Depending on their needs, they may follow mainstream English Language and Literature or EAL lessons working towards Cambridge English qualifications.
Our 3-Year A Level Programme is designed for international students who would benefit from an additional year to develop their academic English and become familiar with the language, vocabulary and expectations of the British sixth-form curriculum.
Students typically repeat Year 12, allowing them to build a strong foundation in their first year while receiving tailored EAL support alongside their A Level studies. They also work towards an IELTS qualification as part of their preparation for university study.
The additional time allows students to develop their understanding of subject-specific terminology, curriculum content and examination requirements before progressing to more extended and in-depth work. By the following year, students are better equipped to approach their A Levels with greater confidence, independence and academic fluency.
Students are based in our Sixth Form centre and learn alongside other A Level students, with subject choices based on their interests and previous academic experience.
For international students joining in Year 9 or Year 10, Claremont provides a bespoke programme designed around their individual learning and English language needs.
Students may receive additional 1-to-1 support outside lessons and Learning Support within the classroom, helping them build confidence in English while keeping pace academically.
