Senior School in East Sussex

At our Claremont Senior School, students aged 13 to 16 take the lead in their learning journey and choose the areas they want to specialise in. 

All the work done previously bears fruits and learners now truly find their voice, developing their independence and character. 

Core subjects

Every student takes the following mandatory subjects, which give them a minimum of five GCSE qualifications.

English Language

Becoming proficient in a world language

In our private secondary school in East Sussex, students develop the necessary skills needed to communicate in a clear and structured way. They learn to interpret the written word and to compare how writers express viewpoints and perspectives, or themes that are important to the way we think and live our lives. 

At the end of the course, students are tested in their skills analysis of previously unseen fiction and non-fiction in the reading sessions and in creative writing and transactional writing (letters, speeches, articles and reviews).

English Literature

Discovering worlds through words

English Literature is co-taught with English Language to all students in Years 9 -11. 

The English Literature texts have been selected to be as varied and inclusive as possible, while covering all the required texts for GCSE. Students study a Shakespeare play, a 20th century play, a 19th century novel and an anthology of themed poetry from across time. 

Learners feel inspired and motivated to challenge their vocabulary and writing skills, as well as develop a love of reading. 

Mathematics

Developing an analytical mind

Students develop fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts. 

They acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems and be taught to reason, make deductions and inferences, and draw conclusions.

Science

Exploring through experimentation

Students can choose between:

Combined Science
The course involves studying the main fields of science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The three disciplines are taught in separate dedicated lessons by subject specialists. Practical work is embedded in the course and students experience a wide range of experiments. 

Science (Separate)
Most science-skilled students decide to pursue studying separate sciences especially when they plan to take one or more in the Sixth Form. This is an accelerated course only high-performing students manage to follow.

Optional GCSE subjects

At our secondary school in East Sussex, students take mandatory subjects under GCSE and have the option of choosing four additional subjects.

Fine Art

Understanding self through creative expression

Students learn how to work on a project, use different techniques, research independently and present a final outcome. 

All students produce individual responses to all of their projects ranging from clay sculptures to mixed media paintings. 

Business

Shaping minds for enterprise

Learners get fascinating insights into the commercial world.

Dance

Expressing through movement

Both the theory and practical aspects of dance are studied and students develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be a dancer and the art and craft of choreography. 

Dancers build up movement as a medium of expression and communication in the performance, creation and appreciation of dance. 

A variety of choreographers and professional dances are studied throughout the course.

Design & Technology

Bringing ideas to life

Students attend this a modern subject and have opportunity to develop capability in designing and making high quality, sustainable products that serve genuine purpose in society. They are provided with computer-aided design and manufacturing equipment (CAD and CAM). 

Students understand uses, learn about materials, analyse products and discover how things work. 

Drama

Performing for the world

Students develop confidence, self-expression and an enquiring mind with this excellent course. It supports children to value their own ideas and opinions and leads them to support their own creative decisions. 

Through practical and theoretical study, students learn how to discover the performance possibilities of texts and other stimuli, and devise dramatical materials of their own.

Foreign Languages

Unlocking international opportunities

Student can take up one or more foreign languages subjects with classes designed to teach about how these languages work and the countries where they are spoken.

Discovering the world

Following this course, students learn to understand how the world works and how the people in it interact.

Mastering musical instruments and singing

Students are divided in small groups where we can cater for the most musically gifted students, as well as those who love music but may not have reached high levels of performance or have little prior knowledge of music theory. 

Learners benefit from an integrated approach to performing, composing and appraising, and they participate actively in choirs or musical ensembles.

Physical Education

Staying fit

Students learn about the impact of physical activity and exercise on the cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular and skeletal systems and how lifestyle choices affect body and mind.

They also: 

  • Perform effectively in different physical activities by developing skills, techniques and selecting/using tactics, strategies and positional ideas
  • Develop their ability to analyse and evaluate to improve performance in physical activity and sport
  • Understand the key socio-cultural influences that can affect people's involvement in physical activity and sport

Photography

Capturing moments

Our course dedicated to students who enjoy playing with imagery and love taking photographs! 

Students research photographers who shaped this discipline and learn how to experiment with cameras, studio lighting and editing.

Religious Studies

Travelling through faiths

Students who choose this subject like to be challenged academically while dealing with contemporary ethical issues. 

They enjoy lively debates and are asked to justify, dispassionately, their beliefs and opinions.

Focus on Year 9

Students take up a wide curriculum that tackles English, Mathematics, Science, Information Technology History, Geography, Art, Music, Dance and Drama. 

They discover three main areas of expertise:

  • Humanities - learning about governance, persuasive communication, critical thinking and social studies
  • Performing arts - participating to professionally-led workshops  and creating theatre, music and dance pieces
  • Business studies - exploring marketing, finance and entrepreneurship by creating business plans and pitching ideas

1-Year GCSE Programme

A programme designed for international students who seek to achieve GCSE qualifications in a condensed time frame, while developing bilingual proficiency.

Students prepare English, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Language, Native Language and Economics core subjects, and choose electives between Business, Global Perspectives, Photography and Art. 

Learners are fully integrated into the school life, attending classes with peers, joining clubs, sports and leadership opportunities and taking part in international opportunities. 

London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art

Students take specialised classes to learn how to communicate dramatic text to an audience, acquire interpretative and technical skills and discover the performance process. 

They grow in vocal and physical confidence, developing self-expression, and learn to work creatively and sympathetically with others.


The programme leads LAMDA exams, marked with Pass, Merit and Distinction, and students can participate in group and individual performances. 

Rambert Grades

At our international school in East Sussex UK, students access the new Rambert Grades framework, which considers the dancer as a whole person regardless of Dance background. They learn about Coordination and Timing, Isolation, Extension and Balance.

Claremont has been one of the first centres to adopt the Rambert programme with our students achieving 100% distinctions and merits awarded in 2023.
