British boarding with a global outlook

Claremont boarders find a home-away-from-home in a comfortable and safe environment. All students shape the Claremont community together and experience the same fulfilling boarding-life as both full-term and weekly boarders.

Claremont boarding has been deemed 'Outstanding'  by Ofsted, adding to our pride in our way of life. Our boarders build memories through shared meals, playing sports as a team, going on trips together and having the space to be themselves in a group.

Together we continue to grow the legacy of a century-old community, united in diversity.

Our boarding principles

Claremont boarding is centred around student comfort and wellbeing, valuing mutual respect, encouragements and affirmations, inclusivity and independence.

Two homely boarding houses

House is home for Claremont boarders. Students live, learn and grow in our two boarding houses - Clyde House and Pyke House - both offering the same high standards of care and educational support in a happy, safe environment.

Both houses are built in the old English style with modern home comforts, spacious common rooms and large gardens for students to have fun and make memories.

Boarding

Whether students board to develop their English skills, to become more independent or to enjoy the warmth of boarding life, their stay is always memorable.

After school and weekends

Boarders enjoy a full schedule of social activities in the evenings on school days and on weekends. There are ample events and activities for both Arts and Sports enthusiasts.

During the week, students enjoy our extensive school clubs programme, designed to develop free-thinking and skills-based learning that inspires leadership, creativity, team spirit and academic excellence.

Boarders also keep up with school work during scheduled times after dinner, where House Parents attend and supervise students up to Year 10.

Trips and excursions

Boarders enjoy bowling, cinema trips, Laser-Quest, ice skating, ‘Go Ape’ tree climbing, gardening, zip-line activities and visits to London and local museums such as the Observatory Science Centre in Hertsmonceux.

Both boarding houses are close to mainline train stations with fast trains to London. Year 12 and 13 boarders can visit the city on their own, whilst local towns such as Battle and Hastings are enjoyed by younger students with prior parent agreement.

Friendly induction

Every student goes through a robust induction process which helps them settle in properly and allows parents to get familiar with us. This involves a Zoom interview with our director of boarding, Francoise Armstrong, and an in-depth Zoom call with the House Lead, closer to arrival.

When boarders arrive at Claremont, there is a further two day induction at their boarding house followed by a one day induction at school.

Pastoral care

Our staff stands ready to assist our boarders, anywhere, anytime:

  • The Director of Boarding, Francoise Armstrong, provides a crucial link between school and boarding life
  • Half of the boarding staff reside on the premises and are on call day and night
  • House Leads issue medication, look after sick students and accompany boarders to and from medical appointments when necessary. The House Leads work in close collaboration with the school nurse who visits each boarding house weekly
  • An experienced safeguarding team well placed to recognise even the smallest pastoral concerns.

Healthy food everyday

At Claremont Boarding School, students have breakfast and dinner together at their houses and have lunch together with healthy options of freshly prepared food in our boarding kitchen.

On weekends, boarders have all their meals at the boarding house, and our cooks prepare packed lunches for field trips and day outs. The menu operates on a 3-weekly cycle and is carefully designed to provide our students with a healthy, balanced diet keeping varied dietary requirements in mind.

Our boarders also have the option of preparing snacks for themselves in their stocked house kitchenettes.

Weekly boarding

Weekly boarders return home on weekends to spend time with their families. They usually leave school or their boarding house on Friday evenings, and some return on Monday mornings, while others prefer to come back on Sunday in time for dinner. Students in Years 7 to 10 require a parent or guardian to pick them up and drop them off at their houses.

Weekly boarders can sometimes stay back over weekends to enjoy events or day trips with full-time boarders.

How's life at Clyde and Pike Houses?

Our boarding students love it here. Here's what they have to say.

Weekly boarding at Claremont

I'm one of the youngest at the boarding house and I'm having a very positive experience, sharing time between home, the boarding house and school.
