Pre-Prep Curriculum

In Pre-Prep we develop a happy, positive and creative learning environment. A dynamic and engaging curriculum stimulates the inquisitive but crucially, encourages children to be themselves and to ‘have a go’. Working closely with parents, we develop positive attitudes to learning from the outset, and recognise and reward children for a wide variety of reasons including effort, thoughtfulness, kindness and good manners. In doing so, we are able to inspire and engage each child to make the most of their talents and potential, whilst instilling the notion that getting things wrong, is just part of getting things ‘right’.

Children have naturally enquiring minds and are endlessly curious so our rich and varied curriculum not only builds firm academic foundations but develops skills in the humanities, sciences, sport and the Arts. We firmly believe that reading holds the key to knowledge and learning so there is always a story to tell, a well stocked library and opportunities aplenty for children to practise their skills so that they move on from the Pre-Prep as confident and independent readers. French, Music, Drama, Art and Sport are taught by specialist teachers alongside an imaginative Outdoor Learning programme that goes beyond mudslides and bug hunts.
Forest School certainly gives children the freedom to explore the great outdoors with numerous opportunities for quiet reflection and to ‘tune in’ to the natural world, but in Pre-Prep, a measuring task conducted in the woods can bring a whole new dimension to a Maths lesson in the same way an investigation of our Ice House can create a unique, ‘hands-on’ History moment! Our teachers are resourceful and imaginative and are able to use our wonderful outdoor facilities to create rich learning experiences that bring classroom work to life in more meaningful and memorable ways. Science lessons in the Jubilee Garden, Art in the Peace Garden and reading sessions relaxing in the fields are regular activities for the Pre-Prep children. A spontaneous outdoor learning opportunity is also never far away in Pre-Prep and why wellies are permanently kept on site!
Year 2 children regularly sing and perform for the residents of a local residential Care Home, all Pre-Prep children have regular moments in the spotlight in the O’Byrne theatre and as we are lucky enough to have many place of cultural and historical interest right on our doorstep, school trips often take us to castles, science centres, historic houses and gardens, farms and vineyards and the seaside just 5 miles down the road!

National curriculum test results in reading for pupils in the preparatory school are consistently much higher than the national average.
