About the Pre-Prep Department

The Pre-Preparatory department comprises three year groups - Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. There are parallel forms in each year with a maximum of 18 in a class. Small classes ensure that children have an individual programme of study in all areas of development to suit particular needs.

Children join the Pre-Preparatory department in the September following their fourth birthday. Whilst most transfer directly from our Nursery School, each year a few children join us from elsewhere.

Pupils in the Reception class follow the Foundation Stage curriculum, and many successfully complete this well before the end of their first year in Pre-Prep Department.

The emphasis throughout the Pre-Prep Department is to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in the foundation subjects of Mathematics and English, providing a very solid springboard for later development in other disciplines.

Whilst National Curriculum Guidelines are fully considered when planning programmes of study, there is a strong, traditional emphasis on the basic skills of Numeracy and Literacy, supporting or challenging each pupil as appropriate.

Scientific investigation is explored by each group and lessons are based on practical investigations. The subjects of geography, History, Art and IT develop and encourage the young child’s enquiring mind.

All children in Pre-Prep enjoy Music, French and Sport. These subjects are taught by specialist staff.

Personal, social and emotional development are given high priority in our curriculum. We aim to foster attitudes that promote respect, care, politeness and helpfulness towards others as well as developing self-esteem.

Pre-Prep pupils participate in many trips and events throughout the year – these include visits to farms, zoos, historical sites and the seaside. They have the opportunity to study a wide range of musical instruments, take private drama lessons and join after school clubs like art, IT and dance.
